Bone and Bread by Saleema Nawaz

This title is short-listed for Canada Reads 2016 and the subject matter interested me.  This is a very character based novel.  It takes place in Montreal where two recently orphaned sisters, Sadhana and  Beena live above their family’s bagel shop. Since the death of their father the shop is now being run by their Sikh Uncle.  When their Mother passes on the girls are left on their own with the Uncle.  Sadhana develops an eating disorder that hospitalizes her many times.  Beena struggles with the need to feel loved.

This is a very character driven book.  The sister's lives seem fraught with bad decisions and yet that is what made them real to me.
It will be very interesting to hear the Canada Reads debate to see how it is defended and the reasons it was chosen for the short-list.
