Jumpstart the World By Catherine Ryan Hyde

Posted by Karole-Anne Christianson

Catherine Ryan Hide' Jumpstart the World explores tolerance and acceptance of those who are different. Elle has a crush on her neighbour Frank who is hard working, kind and happens to be transgender. Elle is accepted at her new school by the group of kids that are on the fringe. Another neighbour struggles with mental illness. The book explores the pain of unrequited love, the ache to belong, the yearning to undo mistakes and importance of honoring everyone. The title comes a quote from Frank talking about activism, "Sometimes you have to jumpstart the world just to get it to be what even the world admits it should be."
