Moloka'i is the story of Rachel Kalama, a little Hawaiian girl who dreams of travelling to far-off lands just as her father, a merchant seaman, does. Her dreams are shattered when she discovers a small red spot on her skin. When a health official is made aware of Rachel's leprosy, she is taken from her home and family and sent to Kalaupapa, the settlement on Moloka'i for quarantined lepers.
Although this is a sad and heart wrenching story, it is told with humor and compassion and warmth. Brennert shares his love of Hawaii by enriching readers with his knowledge of Hawaiian history and culture.
A truly excellent read.
