"A Little Life" is not a little read. Weighing in at 720 pages this hard cover book requires a generous time commitment. Hanya Yangihara has written a modern tragedy worthy of the hours it takes to complete.
The breadth of the book is ambitious. The story begins with a group of college friends and their life stories. Gradually the novel shifts to make Jude the central character of the story. Through the character's lives the author tackles such monumental themes as abuse, addiction, sexuality, and self loathing but she also tackles success, pride and self discovery.
Due to the subject matter, the book was not an easy read but one that deserves time to both digest and contemplate. Sometimes graphic and painful this book is not for the faint of heart. Shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize 2015.
