The Fishermen - Chigozie Obioma

Set in 1990s Nigeria, Chigozie Obioma's debut novel, "The Fishermen" is told from the point of view of a nine year old boy, Ben. While his father has big dreams for all of his young boys, they have dreams of their own. When their father sets off to work in the city, they explore outside their permitted boundaries.

Venturing into forbidden territory of the nearby river the boys encounter a madman. Under the mango trees the eldest is convinced that he will be betrayed by one of his brothers. This single interaction transforms the entire family.

Crisp and vivid writing makes this tragedy palpable. This is a mythic story worth reading. Shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize 2015.
